Overview
GMC introduced the S-15 alongside the Chevrolet S-10 as part of GM's first domestically built compact pickup program. It offered the same regular-cab short and long beds, an extended cab from 1983, and the same range of engines: Isuzu 1.9-liter gas four and 2.2-liter diesel early on, then the 2.5-liter Iron Duke, 2.8-liter V6 and from 1988 the 4.3-liter V6.
GMC set it apart with its own grille and trim packages such as "Sierra" and "High Sierra", and appearance options like the Gypsy Magic. The S-15 Jimmy SUV followed in 1983.
For 1991 the truck was renamed Sonoma and the Sierra trim names were retired so as not to be confused with the full-size Sierra pickup.
