Overview
Unveiled in August 1985 at a dealer event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the Comanche was AMC's answer to Japanese compact pickups. The $7,049 base 2WD was the cheapest Jeep of 1986. It shared the Cherokee's front end and Uniframe-style structure but used long leaf springs mounted beneath the axle.
Engines were AMC's 2.5-liter four, the Chevrolet-sourced 2.8-liter V6 and a Renault 2.1-liter turbodiesel (1986-87). The 4.0-liter inline-six arrived in 1987 with 173 hp, growing to 190 hp in 1991-92 under Chrysler's control. Command-Trac part-time and Selec-Trac full-time 4WD were offered.
Trims included Chief, Laredo, Pioneer and the sporty Eliminator. A short six-foot bed arrived for 1987. Chrysler ended production on June 12, 1992 after 190,446 trucks.
