Overview

Introduced in May 1972 as the 1973 model, the "RokeHi" Hilux offered a more comfortable interior and, for the first time in North America, a long bed (7 ft 2 in per the 1975 US brochure). US trucks used the 2.0-liter 18R (97 hp SAE net in the 1973 brochure) through 1974.

The 1975 facelift made the truck larger with more standard equipment. It brought the 2.2-liter 20R four (96 hp), an optional five-speed manual and the SR5 ("Sport Runabout 5-speed") package, which colloquially became the name of a model in itself. The "Hilux" name was fully dropped in the US starting with the 1976 model year, in favor of "Pickup".

Toyota never offered a factory four-wheel-drive version, but from 1975 to 1979 Off Road Marketing of Garden Grove, California sold the Wolverine 4x4: a 2WD truck converted with a Dana 30 front axle, Dana 20 transfer case and Cambria leaf springs, sold through Toyota dealers with the 20R and a five-speed manual.

The next generation, introduced for 1979, brought a factory 4WD truck.
