Overview

Development of the second-generation Tacoma started in 2000 under chief engineer Chikuo Kubota, with much of the work done by Hino. It was unveiled in Chicago in February 2004 and launched on October 18, 2004 as a 2005 model, taking Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2005.

Two engines were offered: the 2.7-liter four and a 4.0-liter 1GR-FE V6 rated at 236-245 hp. A 6,500-lb tow rating came with the V6 and Tow Package; payload ranged from 865 to 1,685 lb depending on model. Cab choices were regular, Access Cab and Double Cab with a 5.0- or 6.1-foot bed.

Toyota added the X-Runner sport truck (4.0 V6, 6-speed manual, lowered with an X-brace), TRD Sport and Off-Road packages, the 2011-14 T/X Baja, and a 2015 TRD Pro (about 1,200 built). A 2012 refresh brought a new front end and interior, and the regular cab was dropped for 2015.

Production moved from Fremont to San Antonio in 2010. A November 2016 settlement covered frame rust on 2005-2010 trucks.

Note: Wikipedia classes the second-generation Tacoma as mid-size.
