Overview

Built from July 1996 on the DN platform shared with the Durango, the second-generation Dakota was larger and borrowed Ram styling. Base engines were an AMC 2.5-liter four (120 hp) and a 175-hp 3.9-liter V6, with the 5.2-liter V8 (225 hp) until 1999.

A limited-edition R/T option arrived in spring 1998 with a 250-hp 5.9-liter Magnum V8 and 345 lb-ft of torque, 17-inch wheels, and sport seats; it was offered through 2003. The 230-hp 4.7-liter PowerTech V8 joined in 2000. In Brazil a diesel Dakota was built from 1998 to 2001.

The 2004 model year gained a 210-hp 3.7-liter PowerTech V6, and the third generation arrived for 2005.

Note: Wikipedia classes the Dakota as mid-size; it is listed here because it bridged the compact and full-size segments.
