Overview

Sold in the US as the "Truck" (the Pickup name was retired for 1984), the N50/N60/N70 generation introduced the Xtracab extended cab with 6 inches of cargo room behind the seats. Its 4WD short-wheelbase version spawned the 4Runner in 1984.

Engines in the US began with the 2.4-liter 22R and fuel-injected 22R-E (115 hp from 1984); the 22R-TE turbo (135 hp, 173 lb-ft) was offered from 1985 (EPA lists it through MY1988). Diesels were dropped after 1986 in the US. For 1988 (its first EPA listing) the 150-hp, 3.0-liter 3VZ-E V6 arrived as the 4WD upgrade.

For 1986 Toyota added a long-bed 2WD Xtracab (RN70) and a dual-wheel cab-chassis for the American market, and 4WD models moved from a leaf-sprung solid front axle to a double-wishbone torsion-bar independent front suspension. A mild refresh in 1986 brought a one-piece bumper and new interior.

The next truck, from 1989, kept the same formula in a more modern package.
