Overview

Launched in September 1988, the fifth-generation Toyota Truck brought one-piece bed sides that eliminated the earlier seams, roomier Xtracabs with optional jump seats and a longer wheelbase for 4WD Xtracabs. The rear-wheel-drive V6 Xtracab SR5 won Motor Trend's Truck of the Year in the launch year.

North American trucks used the 2.4-liter 22R (109 hp) and fuel-injected 22R-E (113 hp), or the 3.0-liter 3VZ-E V6 (150 hp). All 4WD models had double-wishbone torsion-bar front suspension, while internationally this was initially limited to certain trims. A minor facelift came for 1992.

Final assembly took place at Long Beach, California (1988-95) and from 1990 at NUMMI in Fremont, where the Tacoma would later be built. The Truck was replaced by the Tacoma for model year 1995.

The truck family also appeared in Europe as the Volkswagen Taro.
