Overview

Aimed at Americans who graduated from compact Toyotas to full-size domestics, the T100 arrived for 1993 with a full 8-foot bed and the Hilux's engine and suspension setup. It launched with the 150-hp 3.0-liter V6 and soon added a 150-hp 2.7-liter four. For 1995 came the 190-hp, 3.4-liter 5VZ-FE V6 and an Xtracab (announced December 1994), which boosted sales by 150%.

It could carry a 4x8 sheet of plywood between the wheel wells, and the maximum tow rating was 5,200 lb with a 2,450-lb payload. Three trims were sold: base, DX and SR5. A driver's airbag arrived in 1994 and a TRD supercharger (about 260 hp) was available for 1997-98.

All T100s came from Hino's plant in Tokyo, so they carried the 25% chicken tax, and capacity was limited to 40,000 per year. Sales reached the mid-40,000s in 1996.

It ended in July 1998 and the 1999 Tundra, planned as "T-150" before Ford objected, took over. Wikipedia classifies it as full-size, so it sits at the edge of the compact scope.
