Overview

The second-generation S-10 arrived for 1994 on the same GMT325 platform with new bodywork, a 2.2-liter Vortec four replacing the Iron Duke, and a revised 4.3-liter Vortec V6. All special models of the first generation were dropped but the new ZR2 off-road package (wider track, boxed frame, 31-inch tires, Bilstein shocks) and the SS sport model debuted.

Airbags came gradually: driver's side for 1995 and a passenger bag with the 1998 facelift, which also brought a new front end and full interior redesign. The SS was replaced by the Xtreme for 1999. A third door arrived on extended cabs for 1996 and a four-door crew cab for 2001, available only with 4WD and automatic in LS or SLS trim.

The S-10 EV of 1997-98 used the GM EV1's powertrain and was leased to fleets. Regular and extended cabs ended after 2003; the last crew cab left the line in January 2004, replaced by the Colorado.
